Jason King

Jason King is the incoming Dean of the Thornton School of Music at USC and the current Chair of the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music at NYU. Jason has written for publications like Pitchfork, Billboard, Slate, and many others, and was the host and co-producer of NPR’s flagship video documentary series Noteworthy, on the creative process of superstars like Dua Lipa, Alicia Keys, Maxwell, and others. He was also the host of CNN’s podcast series Soundtracks: The B-Sides; Spotify’s Sound Barrier, about the life and music of Sylvester; and has served as a marketing and branding expert for artists like Drake, Jay Z, Madonna, Lady Gaga, and others. Jason is also the author of The Michael Jackson Treasures, and appears in numerous documentaries, including Netflix’s This is Pop series and Remastered on Sam Cooke, as well as two Spike Lee documentaries on Michael Jackson. In 2021, The Beatles’ company commissioned King to write a four-part radio series on The Beatles and Black music. He is an inaugural member of the Hip-Hop council at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., the Black Genius Brain Trust, and he serves on the advisory board of the Journal of Popular Music Studies.
